SIM-UOL FIRST CLASS HONOURS? (part 4 last part)

Thank you guys for all the emails and questions about UOL, i didn't know my posts have such high ratings. I'm glad to share whatever i know about UOL to you all and yes i'm graduating! Actually i shouldn't put an exclamation mark because i love schooling. I love to study and be in school. haha.

I received more emails than usual these two days and especially yesterday when results were out! If you read part 1, part 2 and part 3, u will know that my grades were totally unexpected each time. I did badly first year, and scored first class marks the second year due to a change of study techniques. I used the same technique to study for my third year (which is this year 2016) hoping to get a First Class Honours. I just needed 2 more As!!! I was pretty positive about getting FCH. I studied my materials extensively. And my results?

Recap on all my grades:

First year,
Principles of Accounting 55
Corporate Finance 55
Principles of Banking and Finance 43
Microeconomics 37 (failed)

Second year,
Financial Intermediation 75
Investment Management 70
Microeconomics 74 (retake)

Last year,

EBIZ 66
ESAP 64
MSM 77

I nearly died when i saw my marks. My most confident subject ESAP scored 64. I reflected and came to a conclusion that my section A scored badly because i only took 15 minutes to finish them and left the rest of the time for section B long essays questions.

I took the recommendation of the examiner by writing less than one page for each question on section A. I wrote about 3/4 page each. During the exam, i forgotten the years of those theories. To be safe, i didn't write them down on my section A. I guessed i focused too much on section B and neglected section A. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED.

OVERALL, I ONLY NEEDED 4 MORE MARKS (making EBIZ 70 from 66) TO GET FCH. wts.

So guys, i didn't get a FCH, i will be graduating with a Second Upper Honours. And i am not proud of it at all. My goal was first class. I worked hard for it but the marks were very unexpected.

I also came to one very important conclusion:

ASK YOUR EXAMINER DURING THE UK REVISION ON WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOUR ANSWERS.

Ask them so u know what u need to do during exam and how u should be revising! Every subject has a different way of answering questions. I scored well for my FI, getting 75 and so i picked up two more theory mods for my last year (EBIZ and ESAP) thinking that i should be able to handle theory mods. Sigh.

As for EBIZ, i have nothing much to say. I was super stressed out over this module because i don't understand a single thing my lecturer was talking about. I thought i understand and by the time i go home, i forgot everything. It was the UK revision class that saved my ass. Pick your lecturer properly. Go and clash other lecturer's classes if you feel your lecturer isn't helping you and do this early (properly during the 1st of 2nd lesson) because every lecturer has different speed and way of teaching.

As for MSM, i thank Mr Quek for helping me. He gave this number to the class and i texted him during my revision and he replied me. There was once when i was doing a self-test during 9pm and i texted him at 9.30pm thinking its late to disturb ur lecturer but he replied me at 10pm. haha.

I should have scored better for MSM, like a 80+ to make his help worthwhile. But i did my very best for MSM.

Overall, the most disappointing subject is ESAP. I nearly cried last night upon seeing my results. Everyone told me i did well because they have seen the efforts i put in. If this is so, then i must have either started my revision late or i'm stupid because these efforts only led me to a second upper???

I wanted to end my university with a perfect note. I'm really disappointed. But u know what? There is still a Master's degree :))) . I've been wanting to take a Masters but since everyone says it is pointless to do that and i should get work experience first, then so be it. Currently i'm still finding a job. Tight economy this year i guess. Cannot anyhow work in an ABC company too.

Although i'm still disappointed and sad, i couldn't change my marks. What's done is done. The most important thing is to ask myself if i have any regrets. Any tiny bits of regrets will make you disappointed. Had i started my revision earlier like in December instead of February, i might be able to push to a FCH? Had i practise more on Section A on Esap, i might get an A? Those 2 were my regrets.

On a side note, i really do enjoy my revision period. I had a lot of fun practising my essays, trying to remember stuff, drawing tons of graphs and discussing answers with my friends. And also emailing lecturers for clarification. Those were my happy moments and is what that comforts me. Yuen man, you did your best. Give yourself a pat on your back.

Like what my boyfriend says, this is not the only highlight in my life. We fall and we learn. But this is also a very heart pain memory for me. From doing badly in year 1 to scoring As in year 2 and suddenly having the chance of getting FCH but a twist in year 3. I'm trying to console myself now. haha. I still need time to process all these things.

Alright guys! I'll be happy if you share your results below the comments or email me! I'm a graduate now! I will miss school! I will miss studying 14 hours a day!

Officially ending my UOL post. xx

PS: Although i didn't get A for my ESAP and EBIZ, i am selling my notes (in softcopies). Inclusive of self-written essays and other additional materials. Just to note that i have a friend who uses my ESAP notes too and he got 70. So it is a matter of writing style i guess. Email me for rates!

Update Aug2017:

Many have been asking me about the chances of landing yourself in a job after graduating from a private university. Here is a post i wrote about my job hunting experience (you can read it here). Overall, it took me 3 months to get myself into a permanent job. I am currently working in a MNC. Great staff benefits, great boss, everything is great. I am seriously very lucky. I also get to travel to other country for work trips. My starting salary was above 2.5k market rate. (Almost near 3k).

Most of my friends who graduated in UOL too were offered a pay range of between 2.4k-2.6k. If you want to start working in a bank, probably a personal banker, your pay would be 3k + (excluding your commission).

I am helping a reader to do a shoutout to sell his notes. He just got back his results!

  1. Hello Kacey! Congrats on your Second upper and i believed that you have already given your best and got the most out of your learning journey! I still have 1 more year to go and do you know any lecturers that are good given HRM lectures? :)

    1. Hi! i've asked my friend who took HRM for this. she said there is only one main lecturer teaching almost all the classes called Prabar. :) Jiayou on ur last year! hopefully u can get FCH :)

  2. Hey babe im in the same situation as you so I know how it feels. I'm at a lost. Was invited to achievers event as well but declined to attend cos wasn't free. Got 2 68 marks this year. Now i've experienced the highs and the lows. I really put in the effort this year, even more than when i got the commendation.

Anw, congratz on graduating. I know its nothing much. I just want you to know that you are not alone in this. :)

    1. Yaaaa u know how i feel DDD: . so sad right? and disappointed. Could have seen u during the event if u came! The commendation award put us high up like we can get FCH but when results came it pulled us down. hais. anw congrats on ur graduation too! Thank u :) R u B&F too? maybe will see u during the official graduation. I was still dreaming about getting FCH and then being able to attend the achiever's event for this year. sad...

    2. Yup im in B&F too, will say Hi! if I see you during graduation.

sad is an understatement. I wouldn't put myself through so much stress, wasted effort, lack of sleep, time, energy, if i was just aiming for 60. I got angered to the point of doubting UOL's marking because I didnt score for papers I had the most confidence in, but scored for those that I didnt have. I sacrificed and miss out on so much.

I'm trying my best to look on the bright side of things. What I learn from this experience is that even with my best efforts, sometimes we will still fail. And that it is ok to fall. Pick yourself up. Life goes on. Never put all your eggs in 1 basket and just appreciate life :)

  4. Hello!Congrats on your results!
How are the grades for Year 1 counted? :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank u :) my results not good enough though... As long as u get 5As or 4A with aggregate score of above 590, then u r first class honours. So even if u screw up ur year 1, maybe year 2 and year 3 if got 5As then still FCH :)

      Delete
    2. Meaning if first year I get 3As then it would contribute to the 4As needed for FCH? However, I thought that first year grades are of less weightage?

      Delete
    3. nope. as long as the subject u r studying is a full unit, it is counted :). if u have say 2 half unit scoring A, then technically speaking u only have 1A. So first year grades are not less weightage or what. just make sure u have 5 full unit scoring A can liao. actually pretty easy to get FCH!

      Delete
    4. Hi sorry for asking you this now but u have 4As and an aggregate of 596.25 (55+75+70+74+66+64+77+ your level 100 modules 0.5X(55+43) + average of your 8 subjects 66.25 = 596.25), why didn't you get first class?

  5. Hi. May I know if you read the study guides before lectures?

    1. I actually don't study the first few months, only until December towards Jan then i start :)

    2. Thank you for the prompt reply. Just want to seek your opinion in this. Idk if I should read the subject guide before or after the lecture. What do you recommend?:)

      Delete
    3. Also, when u are revising for exams, do you study the subject guide with texbook first or lecture notes first? Sorry for asking so many questions. Just really happy for you and worry for myself.

      Delete
    4. Oh, u can always read before la! Get a basic idea of what u r gonna expect. Or u read the lecture notes before hand then note down any questions that u wanna ask the lecturer. After the lecturer touch on the topic and still havent clear ur doubts then u can ask him straight away. :) Do more is better than do less in UOL.

      Delete
    5. When i am revising for my exams, i study the subject guide, essential textbooks, further readings and my own googling for extra information. Then i make my own notes. but if i study for math exam, i study subject guide and google/youtube for more info. :)

  6. Should I crash a good lecturer's lesson or remain in my slot but idk if my lecturer is good?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, u go to ur lecturer the first day. If u feel his teaching method not suitable for u then immediately go to the recommended lecturer for the 2nd lesson. This was what i did previously.

      Delete
    2. Ok. Thank you:). Lastly, as for the attendance when crashing lessons, will there be an issue? or is that I just dont tap for the lesson I crash and reach sch early and tap for the lesson I supposed to attend then leave the lt?

      Delete
    3. For theory kind of unit, when assignments are required to be submitted to the lecturer, if I crash the another lesson and submit my work, will the lecturer then know I crash his lesson? and my lecturer will notice if I didnt submit since she has the list of students. I believe you may have faced with this before so just want to seek your experience in how you deal with these issues:).

      Delete
    4. If u submit not-ur-own-lecturer's work, he will know u crash his lesson. Ur own lecturer will also know u didnt submit the assignment. Actually i don't do assignments. Sometimes other lecturers dont like crashers so if u think he minds crasher, then u dont submit ur work to him. U can have someone who is in ur own lecture class to inform u on the assignments so u can submit to ur own lecturer on time.

      Delete
    5. QNS: Lastly, as for the attendance when crashing lessons, will there be an issue? or is that I just dont tap for the lesson I crash and reach sch early and tap for the lesson I supposed to attend then leave the lt?

ANS: I dont tap my card when i crash lessons, no use also. U can tap early for ur own class instead. The attendance only matters for international students. I have an attendance record of going less than 50% and i didnt get ban from prelims. so its fine.

  9. Hi pretty!!Congrats on ur results! It's really awesome!I'm currently taking UOL program too.Just curious about the classification. How to determine the grade if I take 12units and 5 of them are foundation unit?while the remaining units are further units

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank u! But a FCH would have been better. 5 of them are foundation unit? Then how many half unit are there? as long as full unit is A then it is counted as one A. So 2 half unit modules make up 1 full unit.

      Delete
    2. At least U have tried your best!! If separate math1 and stat1,there will be 13 units for me(include 2 half units),but they would only take 9 units into calculation is it?

      Delete
    3. U 3 years right? it is ok, as long as u got 5 full units A can liao. I think it is better for u to get ur core modules all As instead of relying on the fundamental. i didnt need to take fundamental subjects so im not very sure too but i know got 5As can liao. haha.

For attendance, u got Some warning letter or email when ur attendance percentage was lower than 50%? Coz M scared I wont be able to take exam if this thing happen.. Thanks..

    1. There are night classes on weekdays :) 7-10pm. If u are working fulltime and studying 3 units, it may be very tough for u but there are students doing that. perhaps u can work part time and study? It all depend if u are looking to just pass or get good marks.

I receive 'warning' email about my attendance haha. but i just ignore them. I was scared that they will ban me from taking the exam but it wont happen because i'm paying the exam fees to the UOL, not SIM. at most they ban me from prelims only. :) That is what i think haha.

  20. Hi Kacey, congrats on your outstanding achievement!
I have a question that has been bothering me for quiet some times, I heard that if you fail one subject in UOL you have to repeat the whole year because they only have one final examination unlike in other schools (RMIT,UB,etc) where if you fail one class you only need to retake that class. Mind shedding some light on me since you grades were not very satisfying on the first year? Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey, thanks :) u repeat ur whole year just means u r retaking that failed subject for the year. For eg if I fail micro this Sem, then I need to retake micro. And if next year I'm alr taking 5 subjects, plus failed micro now, it becomes 6 studying subjects for me. In that case, it's encourage to either split that 6 subjects into 2 years (ie stretch one more year so u take 3 subs, 3 subs per year) or u apply to take 6subs in a year (usually school will reject). Hope this clarifies :)

  21. Hey Kacey!

I am a first year student (started in Sept 2016) and will be sitting for my first ever UOL exams this year May.
I have not started my revision and as of now, I'm trying to do notes etc, catching up on notes... Not really confident about the prelims at all.
Didn't really do my assignments cuz I think I wasn't ready to do it yet, class test as well.

Need some advice or some words from an experienced senior haha

Also, how does this FCH work? I noticed you did not too well for first year and second year was bomb (wow!!), is the FCH calculated and awarded to you if you have at least 5 FCH grades throughout your 3 years course?

Anyway still, congratz on your second upper class nevertheless! All the best in your future endeavours!

    1. Hi Alexa, sorry i thought i replied. Have your papers ended already? i didn't do my assignments nor go to the prelims either. Don't worry u r not alone. haha. But u have to study really hard for ur exam. unless u r naturally smart.

FCH is either u get 5As or u get 4As but an aggregate score of over 590 marks i think. i can't remember too. I was expected to get FCH because i just needed another 2 As. End up i had only 4As and didnt manage to get aggregate of over 590. So i was Second Upper.

hope u get a FCH! good luck!

  24. Hello! I just finished my UOL Intro to econs paper today. And i am very sure that i'm going to fail the paper. if i were to fail this paper and to repeat the year, i won't be able to proceed on to year 2 right? and will it be reflected on my transcript that i failed year 1? will it affect me from getting a FCH?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. if u fail this paper, it depends how many subjects u r taking in ur next year. If lets say next year u will be taking 4 subjects, then now u fail Intro to Econs, it just means next year u will be taking 5 subjects! The max subjects u can take per year is 5 subjects only i think. So its not like u cannot proceed to year 2 :) . u r technically still in year 2, just adding on one more retake subject.
it will be reflected on ur transcript but it wont affect u getting FCH. as long as have 5 As , u will get FCH.

      Delete
    2. But in order for me to take Micro and Macro Econs next year, i have to pass my intro to econs. Cause it is a prerequisite for me. Cause im in Econs and Politics. Econs is my major.

      Delete
    3. Oh yes u need to pass ur intro to econs, which means now u cannot take Micro or Macro. Then u need to calculate how many years u can finish ur uni now (if say max a year u take 5 subjects and assuming u wont fail anymore subjects).

      Delete
  25. Hi Kacey,

How much I have to pay to retake one paper?
How many modules do we have to pass and move on to year 2?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, its the same fee as PER exam paper to retake the paper. Last time i opt for self-study when retaking, so i didnt pay for the tuition fee. But i'm not sure if its compulsory to attend the module now?
Its not how many modules u need to pass to move on to year 2. Its more like finishing ur degree within 3years (if u didn't take bridging). Say if u fail a fundamental module, then ur next year's module will be affected cuz u can't take some modules as u need to pass that fundamental module. Then this will drag ur uni years. One year max u can only take 5 subjects.

      Delete
    2. 5 subjects mean 500 units per year or 5 modules per year?

      thanks!

  26. Hi Kacey!! Congrats on your results!! anyway i just wanted to ask, im a marketing graduate from poly and idk if going to RMIT or UOL would be better/easier to score. What dyou think? And, after going through UOL, do you recommend it?

Also, do you know of anyone doing Psychology in UB? Do you know if its an easy degree to get FCH in SIM? Sorry for the many questions!! Thanks so much!! :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. RMIT is easier to pass. Like they have common tests and projects whereas UOL only has one paper to take for every subject (100% paper) so if U fail then u gonna retake next year. But I love UOL's system because I don't like doing projects, I like that they have ALOT of free time for us and I like that my result is ultimately depending solely on my effort :)

I have a Friend studying in UB business , I can't remember their academic structure but I rmb the school fees was much heavier than UOL, so I just chose UOL.

It's honestly quite easy to get a FCH in UOL. u just need 5As or 4Bs with aggregate 590 marks.

      Hope it helps !

Getting a commendation is actually harder than getting FCH since straight As in a year is more challenging. U are already a FCH in my eyes cos u know how "surprisingly" UOL marks our papers. You dont really know what they want or they could mark u down based on their mood etc. You have done for the community much more den any FCH has ever did by educating new comers and motivating others on their UOL journey.. good things come to those who wait

  30. Hi there! Any recommended lecturers for microneconomics and FI? I have to retake the mods next year . Any tips for scoring well for these two mods?

    1. Micro - Derek Hui.
FI - not too sure... Lilibeth is okay. She was my lecturer.
      Scoring well
Micro- Either naturally smart / PRACTISE ALOT (i.e. try all different types of qns or even come out ur own qns to test urself. But all of these requires u to understand the concept first)
FI - MEMORISE TILL CRAZY and google a lot of relevant articles/news to support ur answer.

Can you recommend me which 100 units mod that is easy to score? I prefer calculation.

    1. Hi ! What are the 100 units mod ? haha. i can't remember. If u prefer calculation, then jus take any 100 units that have more calculation than theory. Is Micro 100units? if so, u can take that.
